Repellent Chemicals

Repellent chemicals provide good protection from termites because they are easily identified and strongly avoided by them. Unfortunately however, if there is a break in the chemical, either from being unable to access all areas, or if a treated area is later compromised, termites can identify the gaps and gain ingress.

The most commonly used repellent is Bifenthrin, with a residual effectiveness of up to 5 years.

Non Repelling Chemicals

Repellent chemicals are not identifiable by the termites. Since they don’t avoid the treated areas, they will move through the chemical and die as a result of coming into contact with it. They will also pass the chemical to other colony members that they come into contact with, thus creating a compounding result.

Because termites are unable to identify these non repellents, they identify no distinction between areas that are treated and people that are not, so there is likely to be reduced ingress through gaps.

Fipronil is the most commonly used non-repellent available today, and has a residual life of up to 8 years.

Baiting Systems For Termites

Above Ground Systems can be used to eliminate termites from homes by placing bait stations at the site of activity, so they begin to feed on the bait matrix instead of the timber they were consuming.
